"Eternals," the furthest down the line expansion to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, is a more than two hour epic that presents almost twelve new characters, bounces to and fro through time north of millennia, and starts with an initial message creep that uncovers a formerly obscure beginning of the human species. Indeed, even the most vigorous MCU fan might be bewildered.

The Comic


The Eternals comic appeared in 1976 after its author, Jack Kirby, got back to Marvel following a five-year spell at DC. The comic is broadly viewed as a topical continuation of a gathering of stories he had dealt with at DC that blended sci-fi and legend and were known as the "Fourth World." But since Kirby could don't really utilize similar characters from his time at DC, he made new ones for Marvel.


The Eternals uncovers that millennia prior, a gathering of goliath extraterrestrials known as the Celestials came to Earth and probed chimps to make three new species: people, Eternals and Deviants. The Eternals are an everlasting race of wonderful superpowered creatures, and the Deviants are monstrous, unsteady animals that hate their makers. The series follows the contentions that emerge when the Celestials return to Earth to decide whether their manifestations are deserving of life. The Eternals was not an especially fruitful series at that point, and it was dropped after 19 issues.
